After the recent Orlando shooting, you’re probably wondering why urban terrorism has risen in numbers. It seems like terrorism is the popular way to garner attention these days, whether it be because of hatred or belief. At Hercules Security Fencing, we specialize in anti-terrorism security. But don’t let this fear stop you from living your life. There are plenty of myths about terrorism that cause the public to stir into a frenzy, and though protection is important, you don’t need to stay up at night worrying. Here are three of those myths you might want to know about.
- Terrorism is mainly perpetrated because of Islam.
This is a common myth that may seem statistically true, but it’s just a trick of the media. No religion, race or creed runs the terrorism world. Terrorism can often be wrongly defined as a mass shooting or a large robbery. Both of these are forms of terrorism; and in actuality, a lot of Americans who have no affiliation with Islam are perpetuating these crimes. Think of someone like Timothy McVeigh, a white American man who took innocent lives through a vicious bombing attack. While he was a terrorist, who had grown up in the States, he’s frequently overlooked. Not to mention, worldwide, terrorism is enacted by all kinds of religions. For example, in the South East, there is a large conflict between Islam and Hinduism that causes a lot of modern terrorism.
- Terrorism is one of our nation’s greatest killers.
Actually, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The average annual total of victims of terrorism is 70.3 (when we include the 3,000 people who died in the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks). By contrast, the rate of death by homicide in America, annually, is 13,700. And to put this into an even larger perspective, over 3,000 people die everyday because of car accidents. People are afraid to fly because of terrorist attacks, but they’re more likely to die driving to work. Of course we should be protecting ourselves from any kind of threat, and so our anti-terrorism security is still important; but you don’t need to worry yourself into a panic attack.
- America has recently experienced its first few large-scale terrorist attacks.
This is very wrong. Terrorism has been both internationally and domestically executed for decades–even centuries. In its heyday, the Klu Klux Klan (who still exist today) acted as domestic terrorists, as they would go on raids and kill as many slaves as they possibly could. There are also many records of modern day lynching from these terrorists. Terrorism isn’t something that should be seen as a faraway problem. Rather, it’s right here in our backyard, and actually far more intimidating.
