Chances are, if you are familiar with security fencing and developing a perimeter security plan, you’ve heard of K-rated fences. However, what exactly are K-rated fences and where should they be used?
What is a K Rating?
K ratings are a type of crash test certification that is issued by a government agency, the Department of State. K ratings are applied to a variety of perimeter security devices including fences, gates, bollards, and barriers. They describe the perpendicular impact penetration of a vehicle traveling at a specific weight and specific speed. K-ratings tell the person looking to purchase a security fence how much a certain item can stop or slow a vehicle trying to drive through the area.
K-Rated Fences
K-rated fences are designed to not budge in the case of a crash and they are used in many different commercial, industrial, and government capacities. Since they are maximum security, K-rated fences are often used in high-security areas to protect the contents from the outside. Where have you seen K-rated fences before? Some of the following:
- Power plants
- Fuel depots for the government
- Chemical plants
- Federal buildings
- Military installations
- Prisons and jails
- Courthouses
- Server farms
- Banking centers
- Any high-security business
- High-profile homes
How Does K-Rated Fencing Work?
K-rated fencing works by adding cable and beam reinforcements to the fencing itself. These strengthen the length of the fencing and make it much more difficult to penetrate. K-rated fences are the absolute standard of protection for many different residential and commercial properties and they offer fantastic protection. K-ratings come in different levels including:
- K4: Vehicles traveling 30 mph and up to 15,000 lbs. in weight
- K8: Vehicles traveling 40 mph and up to 15,000 lbs. in weight
- K12: Vehicles traveling 50 mpg and up to 15,000 lbs. in weight
