Wrought iron fences are absolutely stunning ways to accent your yard, frame your landscaping, and protect your home. However, they don’t come maintenance-free! Extending the life of your wrought iron fence is a necessity to make sure that you protect the investment you’ve made.
Trim Your Landscaping Back
Moisture is a major enemy of wrought iron fences, so keeping excess moisture at a minimum is key. Trim any large plants or shrubs that could make contact with the fence. While the plants themselves aren’t harmful, the morning dew that accumulates on them can be! In general, you should not plant anything that requires regular watering directly along the length of your wrought iron fence.
Clean and Wax
As part of your regular wrought iron fence maintenance, you should practice cleaning and waxing the entire length of it. Use mild soap and water and place it in a spray bottle. Spray small sections, working from the bottom to the top, and rinse them as you go. Dry with a towel immediately after to prevent the water from damaging the wrought iron. Finally, add a thin layer of wax to the surface. Wax will stop the paint covering and protecting your fence from flaking away or bubbling in the sun.
Get Rid of Damage Right Away
If your wrought iron fence does develop any damage, like rust or flaking paint, it’s vital to eliminate the problem as quickly as possible. The longer that the problem remains, the more likely it is to spread and damage other areas of the fence. Use a wire brush to sand off any flaked paint and fill in any damaged portions with metal filler. Next, clean the area again and apply a specially-formulated primer for wrought iron fences. Finally, use rust-resistant spray paint to blend the damaged area back into the rest of the fence.
