The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to keep it rust-free. Here are a few steps you can take to rid your iron fence of rust.
Determine The Current State Of Fence
Before you can formulate a plan to treat your fence, you need to assess its current condition. You want to consider how long has the fence been on the property. The climate of where you live has a major impact on the rust levels of your fence. If it is known for having a lot of snow/rain, salt air, or high humidity, you may have rust spots on your iron fence.
What To Do About Heavy Rusting
If your fence has heavy amounts of rust, you may need to use heavy duty equipment. Get yourself either a disc sander that is lined with coarse sandpaper or a paint scraper to remove any rust that you see. You want to be sure to wear goggles and a face mask. It is also in your best interest to wear old clothes because this is usually a messy job.
What To Do Do About Light to Medium Rust
If the rust on the surface has not progressed significantly, you may be able to remove it using a stiff metal brush. If you don’t have one, you could also use low-grit sandpaper. Once you have removed as much rust as possible, use a rust cleaner to scrub down those same areas.
Finishing Touches
Once you have removed as much rust as you possibly can, give it a good rinse off using a hose. This will help to remove the cleaner and any leftover debris. Once it has dried, consider applying a rust-proof coating to save you from needing to do this again.
