Hercules Fence Proudly Announces the Completion of a Newly Developed Environment for the Endangered Whooping Crane

There were many materials used during the duration of this project, including a 12-foot high chain link fence with a dig barrier included at the base to prevent predators from entering the enclosure.

Hercules Fence is proud to announce the completion of a recent project for the National Zoo’s Smithsonian Biological Conservation Institute (SBCI). This project now provides a safe and comfortable haven for the whooping crane, an endangered bird species. While there are unfortunately less than 900 whooping cranes in existence to date, this new environment located in Front Royal, Virginia provides potential as an area where these birds can safely breed and thereby develop a self-sustaining population. This point alone is one of the many reasons why Hercules Fence is proud to be a part of this incredible project.

Contributions of Hercules High Security

In working alongside Kee Construction of Winchester, Virginia, Hercules Fence contributed to this  $400k+ project spanning nearly eight weeks. Through this effort, five 50’ x 150’ rectangular enclosures were constructed successfully as an enclosure where the birds could be safely maintained. While the safety of these birds was a top priority, it was also crucial to build an enclosure that could also prevent them from escaping the habitat. These enclosures were then divided into three 50’ x 50’ pens with double gates throughout the space. The gates were essential for allowing zookeepers to enter and exit the area as needed safely.

Project Details and Additional Safety Features

Throughout the project, hinges were used to eliminate any large gaps and prevent the cranes from escaping their new enclosure. There were many materials used during the duration of this project, including a 12-foot high chain link fence with a dig barrier included at the base to prevent predators from entering the enclosure. Additionally, there was an overhead netting included, preventing the birds from flying away. This giant net is suspended with four steel cables running from each of the corner posts, with eye bolts attached to a 16’ high center post to make them as sturdy as possible in each pen. This net is protected with a corrugated plastic pipe and stabilized with overhead bracing across the aisle ways using ½” steel cables around the perimeter and helical screws embedded in the surrounding concrete. Insulators were also installed beyond the fence to prevent any intrusion.
