When it comes to security fencing and barriers, the options can be overwhelming. Choosing the right security barrier requires the consideration of many different factors, and it is important to understand all of the options that are available. Understanding the K rating will help you choose the right one for your needs.
What is a K Rating?
The K rating is a Crash Test Certification issued by the Department of State that determines the barrier’s ability to stop a moving vehicle. The rating is based on the penetration power of a 15,000 lb vehicle going at various speeds. A 15,000 lb vehicle is most commonly a large van such as a step van, recognizable as package delivery vans or food trucks. The higher the K rating, the stronger the stopping power.
K Ratings Explained
There are 3 levels of K ratings which are K4, K8, and K12.
A K4 rating will stop a vehicle that is going 30 mph.
A K8 rating will stop a vehicle that is going 40 mph.
A K12 rating will stop a vehicle that is going 50 mph.
Choosing the correct rating for your barrier is essential for keeping your business and the people within it safe. Factors to consider are asset risk, traffic in the area, and measures that are in place to slow an oncoming vehicle.
