3 Bollard Maintenance Tips

bollard maintenance

Each type of security barrier has different needs, but there are a few standard bollard maintenance practices that can help ensure the health and continued performance of your bollards regardless of their composition.

Just like any other piece of security equipment, bollards require regular maintenance and inspection to continue performing as they should. This is especially true for hydraulic or retractable bollards, bollards that protect high-value targets, and bollards that are likely to be hit or scraped by vehicles. Not all bollards should be repaired the same way. Each type of security barrier has different needs, but there are a few standard bollard maintenance practices that can help ensure the health and continued performance of your bollards regardless of their composition.

1. Clean Your Bollards

While it makes sense that the first step in any maintenance project is to assess the condition of your product, that can be hard to do if it is caked in dirt. It can be useful to start your bollard maintenance routine with some light cleaning. This can be done with a hose or pressure washer, and depending on the post material and the level of soil, you may or may not have to scrub lightly. Assuming the level of soil is light and there is no visible damage, you can use a soft brush and some mild soap to clean your bollards. If there are grease marks, graffiti, cement splatter, or other unique compounds dirtying your posts, you may need to use specialized cleaning tools or solvents.

2. Perform Routine Visual Inspection

Once your bollards have been lightly cleaned, perform a visual inspection. This should be done regularly to ensure that no damage goes unnoticed, as severe damage can lead to bollard failure. This is especially true for retractable bollards. Take note of any damage you see. Some minor scuffs can be removed with cleaning, but you may see dings, scrapes, or loose components. Detailed information about which bollards have damage and the extent of the issue will be helpful for your security barrier contractor during the repair process.

3. Contact a Security Fence Professional for Repairs

After you have evaluated the state of your bollards, it may be necessary to contact your local security barrier expert for repair. If your bollards have moderate-to-severe damage, they may not be able to perform the way they must to protect your property. Discuss your security needs with your contractor and determine if your posts must be repaired or replaced entirely.
