A Layman’s Guide to Security Fences

Security Fence SystemsWe all know what a fence is, but there’s more to security fencing than meets the eye. Your facility needs a security fence, but you need to make sure you get the right fence for the job. There are some pretty important factors to consider when deciding on a security fence. Do you think people will attempt to climb your fence? Do you think someone will try to break through it? There are fences specifically designed with these factors in mind. Here’s a quick guide to help you get acquainted with security barriers.

Non-Climb Fences

Most of us have climbed a regular chain-link fence when we were children. The weave of the fence offered small footholds that we could use to climb. Non-climb fences are designed to take these footholds away. They are composed of either parallel vertical bars, or are a modified version of a chain-link fence with a much smaller mesh. If you think someone will try to scale your fence, this is the fence for you.

Anti-Climb Fences

Non-climb fences are great if you think anyone trying to climb your fence will give up when they realize it is too difficult, but what if someone REALLY wants to get over your fence? Just because the fence can’t be climbed doesn’t mean someone can’t get a ladder. This is where anti-climb fences come in. You may think this is the same thing as a non-climb fence, but it isn’t. Unlike a non-climb fence, an anti-climb fence is equipped with additional security features at the top, such as spires or Razzor Ribbon, that make it even more difficult to get over the fence. Fences can even feature spires that curve outward for an added level of security.

K-Rated Fences

Okay, but if someone REALLY REALLY wanted to get through they could just ram through it with a car, right? K-Rated fences are designed to withstand vehicle collisions. Hercules High Security offers fences with ratings of K-4, which can withstand the impact of a 15,000-pound vehicle at 30 miles per hour, K-8, which can withstand the impact of a 15,000-pound vehicle at 40 miles per hour, or K-12, which can withstand the impact of a 15,000-pound vehicle at 50 miles per hour.
