You rely on your iron fence to keep you safe throughout the year, but it relies on you to keep it in good working order throughout the colder winter months. By taking small steps throughout the chilly weeks, you can add years to the life of your iron fence. Here are some of the best ways to maintain your iron fence during the cold weather months.

Take a Look Around Your Fence

First things first, take a walk around your iron fence as it is now. Take your time and really inspect every part of your fence. Look for things like shrubs or low hanging branches that are growing or hanging close to the iron fence. Remove any branches hanging over your fence now, as the weight of inches of snow and ice will almost certainly snap them off and onto your iron fence. Take an afternoon to clear off any debris that has accumulated on the fence, like stray grass clippings or dead leaves. Now is also the time to notice any patches of rust or areas that are damaged so that you can get them repaired before the winter begins.

Clean Up

Now and throughout the year (not just during the cold months) it is a good idea to keep your iron fence clean. Wash the rails with a mixture of warm water and mild soap or soap specifically designed for cleaning iron fencing. Wipe sections that have extra debris with a soft cloth to remove it and keep the fencing in good condition.

Preventing Rust

Just like with wooden fencing, the enemy of iron fencing is excess moisture. Snow and ice and freezing rain will all take a toll on your iron fence, so prevent as much damage as possible now. Seal your iron fence with a protective wax to help seal out any moisture. This is a good idea throughout the year for humid and moist states like Maryland. You can also prime and paint your fence before the winter starts to further protect your fence. Paints and primers can be purchased in rust-proof formulations that will seal the inside of your iron fence from moisture and debris. If you don’t want to experiment with color or crazy designs, you can always paint your iron fence classic black.
