Thankfully, there are different tools you can use and maintenance steps you can take to keep your iron fence rust-free for many years to come. Here are some of the best ways to prevent your iron fence from rusting.
Look at Where You Are
Before you can develop a proper treatment plan, you need to assess what condition your iron fence is in right now. How long has your iron fence been in your yard? Depending on where you live, especially if your climate is known for high humidity, salty air, or reoccurring rain and snow, you might have rust spots. If you have areas of heavy rusting, like spots that have entire flakes of rust coming off, you might need to use more heavy duty equipment.
Removing Heavy Rust
If you have areas of heavy rust, get a paint scraper or disc sander outfitted with coarse sandpaper. Wear a face mask, goggles, and old clothes when removing heavy rust, as tiny pieces of rust could get into your eyes or nose and cause irritation or worse.
Removing Light or Medium Rust
If the rust on the surface of your iron fence hasn’t started flaking yet, you can remove it using a 120-160 grit sandpaper and slowly sanding it off. If you have a stiff metal brush available, you can use that instead! Once you get off as much rust as you can, use a commercial rust cleaner on all of the affected areas. Work the cleaner into the surface using the same stiff metal brush.
Clean Up & Finish
Once you are done removing the rust, use a garden hose to get rid of the excess cleaner, loose rust, and any dust or debris. If there is still rust left, repeat the same things you did before to get rid of it fully. Once you are done, apply a rust proof coating to make sure that the problem won’t occur again!
