5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Electric Fences

An electric fence may be what your commercial property needs!

For many people, Hollywood is their only source of information about electric fences (picture the fence scene in Jurassic Park), so some of these facts may surprise you.

They Are Not Usually Harmful

Many people are afraid to be near an electric fence because they think that touching one could severely hurt or even kill them. The truth is that the jolt would be more of an annoyance than an injury. The zap from an electric fence will keep animals from touching it again, without actually hurting them. Additionally, most fences have pulses of current, rather than the constant stream that you’d have from a wall outlet, so touching it results in a short zap rather than a long, constant shock.

They Aren’t Super Expensive

Many people assume that high-tensile electric fencing is much more expensive than other fencing, but it isn’t. The material costs are relatively consistent with other types of fencing.

Solar Energizers Are Not More Cost Effective

While it seems like they would be, solar energizers are not actually cheaper than paying for the electricity to power your fence. The special energizer, battery, charge controller, and solar panels that you would have to buy would end up costing more than your fence would draw from your power lines.

They Won’t Hurt Birds

In order to feel a shock from an electric fence, the person or thing touching it has to also be in contact with the ground. This is called grounding, and it completes an electrical circuit that allows the energy to pass through you into the earth (this is the feeling of the shock). Because birds sit on the wires and don’t provide any grounding, they don’t feel the current at all.

It Isn’t Recommended For Horses

You may have heard that horses can’t see high tensile wire fences and that’s why you shouldn’t use it for them. This isn’t exactly true. They can see the wire as well as pretty much anybody else can, given that they tend to have 20/35 vision, and their eyes are on the side of their heads. The key is that when they are spooked, the horses may run into the wire even though they see it, and that could hurt them if they got tangled up or cut by it, so other fences are a safer bet.
