A chain link fence is a great first defense in keeping your property safe and secure. Many high-security facilities have opted for chain link fencing around their properties’ perimeter. But, not all chain link mesh and fencing are created equal, so what makes those fences more secure than others? Here are a few things to consider if you’d like to increase the security level of your chain link fencing.
How Could You Increase the Security of a Chain Link Fence?
Familiarize Yourself with Gauges
Metal can come in all different thicknesses and diameters. Typically with gauges, the higher the number, the thinner the metal diameter is. That means a 5 gauge chain link fence is much thicker than an 11 gauge.
Focus on the Bottom
A chain link fence can be built with mesh all the way to the ground, but what happens over time with snow and sun exposure? It can get easier to manipulate the mesh and access your property from under the fence. If this is a huge security concern, you should look into having a bottom rail installed that can make your fence more rigid at the bottom. If you’re concerned about animals digging under your fence, you can also have some mesh buried into the dirt to deter digging,
Install the Posts Closer Together
Installing posts closer together for a chain link fence means the mesh between the posts is more rigid and stronger. This can hold up to someone pushing against the fence mesh or trying to cut and force their way through.
Opt for Steel Fittings
Typically, fittings for a chain link fence are made of aluminum, which is a solid material. However, for a little added security for your fence, you can add steel fittings after installation, and tack welding makes this an extremely secure option.
Consider Additions to the Top
Adding things like razor coils or barbed wire to the top can be a strong deterrent to making your chain link fence as challenging to scale and climb over as possible. You can also opt to make the fence taller, up to 8 feet.
